Engaging with investors
Sharing CR information with our investors and other stakeholders is a significant part of our approach to CR. Responsible lending and customer satisfaction are vital to the organisations that invest in us; and issues such as climate change, our approach to cybersecurity and tax strategy are becoming more prominent.
Every year, we provide information on environmental, social and governance performance and make submissions to a number of the mainstream sustainability indices and established SRI research and rating agencies. The information we submit is independently assessed and considered alongside information from external sources, such as non-governmental organisations, scientific institutions and the media. For example:
Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI)
In 2017, we were notified of our continued inclusion in the DJSI Europe Index and our re-entry into the DJSI World Index having excluded from it in 2016. Our overall 2017 score was 77 (2016: 65) - higher than average for the Diversified Financial Services and Capital Markets sector, which stood at 40 (2016: 44). Our DJSI score is based on our response to a range of economic, environmental and social factors that are relevant to our financial success.
The DJSI World represents the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global BMI, and the DJSI Europe selects the top 20% of the largest 600 European companies in the S&P Global BMI based on long-term economic, environmental and social criteria.
Manjit Wolstenholme Executive Chair at Provident Financial, commented:
“Inclusion in the DJSI World and DJSI Europe is an acknowledgement of Provident Financial Group’s continued efforts to ensure that our Social Purpose remains a core component of our business strategy. This means continuing with our primary role of supplying credit in a responsible manner to non-standard credit customers – those with lower incomes, those with no credit history yet or a very limited credit history, those who have had problems with credit in the past but are now over those problems. It also reflects our continued commitment to take account of the wider environmental, social and governance impacts that our business has.”
FTSE4Good Index Series
Following our annual assessment, we continued to be listed on the FTSE4Good Index Series. Our overall score was 96 out of 100 (2016: 95 out of 100).
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
CDP requests information on the risks and opportunities of climate change from the world’s largest companies, on behalf of 827 institutional investor signatories with a combined US$100 trillion in assets. Through the CDP submission, we can inform investors of any material climate change-related risks and opportunities and how we manage them. Our 2017 CDP submission was rated ‘C Awareness’ demonstrating that we have knowledge of our impacts on climate change and of climate change issues more broadly. Our CDP submissions are published at www.cdp.net.
Euronext Vigeo Indices
We continued to be included within the Euronext Vigeo index: World 120 (the 120 most advanced sustainability performing companies in the European, North American and Asia Pacific regions), the Euronext Vigeo index: Eurozone 120 (the 120 most advanced sustainability performing European companies) and the Euronext Vigeo index: United Kingdom 20 index (the 20 most advanced UK companies based on their sustainability performance).
We were reconfirmed as a constituent of the Ethibel Sustainability Index (ESI) Excellence Europe which is one of the investment registers managed and overseen by the Belgian socially responsible investment (SRI) specialist Forum ETHIBEL. The ESI Excellence Forum is composed of companies that are considered by Forum ETHIBEL to display the best performance in the field of CR.
