Provident Financial included in leading sustainability indexes for fifth year running
The 2009 Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) were announced on 3rd September, and Provident Financial has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) and Dow Jones STOXX Sustainability Index (DJSI STOXX). Provident achieved an overall score of 62% - 19% higher than the average score of other companies from the financial services sector.
The DJSI comprises of the top 10% of companies from around the globe in terms of combining financial profitability with awareness and management of social, environmental and ethical issues. Selection for inclusion in the DJSI STOXX indicates that Provident is amongst the leading edge of sustainable development issues in Europe.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
The DJSI follow a best-in-class approach and include sustainability leaders from each industry on a global and regional level respectively. The annual review of the DJSI family is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labour practices. It accounts for general as well as industry specific sustainability criteria for each of 58 sectors defined according to the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB).
The DJSI World comprises more than 300 companies that represent the top 10% of the leading sustainability companies out of the biggest 2500 companies in the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market Index. The DJSI STOXX tracks the companies with the best performance in terms of social and environmental responsibility in Europe and in the euro zone. The best 20% in the Dow Jones STOXXSM 600 Index are selected as components of DJSI STOXX.
